The Beverage Industry Works with Recycling Partners Across the Country

PET is a light-weight, durable, highly recyclable plastic material. And it is one of the most valuable materials supporting Canada’s recycling systems.

The beverage sector:

  • Supports provincial and territorial beverage container recovery organizations across the country, and have worked together for two decades to optimize the collection and recycling of beverage containers across Canada.
  • Champions the stewardship of 5.7-billion beverage containers distributed in Canada each year.
  • Invests from coast to coast to increase the recovery rate of all beverage containers and to educate consumers, businesses, and governments on the benefits of recycling these containers.

Recycling programs are supported by hundreds of millions of dollars from businesses every year.

In 2020, the Canadian Beverage Association worked collaboratively with the Ontario government and other stakeholders to build on the success of the Blue Box program by agreeing to move forward with the introduction of a new, comprehensive beverage container recycling program with convenient public space recycling at parks, public buildings and special events. The beverage industry strongly supports the government’s proposed beverage container diversion targets of 75% by 2026 and 80% by 2030.

These targets will support the beverage sector with its efforts to  build on the success of the Blue Box program with the introduction of a new, comprehensive beverage container recycling program that provides convenient public space recycling at parks, public buildings and special events.

Since 2020, the beverage industry has been working with the Quebec government and other stakeholders to develop an enhanced, modernized deposit return system in the province. The CBA looks forward to the continued development and execution of this plan.
