Patrick Luciani, co-author of XXL: Obesity and the Limits of Shame wades in on the merits of a beverage tax and finds it lacking. Check out his Opinion Piece in the February 3, 2015 National Post’s Full Comment section or online at Patrick Luciani: Another Fat Tax Fail.
Patrick comments on the year old SSB tax in Mexico, the failed fat and sugar tax in Denmark and the “Australian Paradox,” where over the past 30 years obesity levels in Australia have been rising as sugar consumption has been falling.
His general conclusion – “First, we have to admit that obesity is much more complex than most people think and that top-down government policies such as taxes don’t work.” and “The closer you look at the obesity problem, the more complex it becomes.”
