Food and Beverage Companies Cutting Calories

According to a recent Reuters article, in 2012 the food and beverage industry sold 6.4 trillion fewer calories in the American marketplace successfully delivering on a pledge made in 2010 to remove 1.5 trillion calories from the marketplace.

Why does this matter to Canadians?

Because what benefits our American neighbours can also benefit Canadians. Many of the product innovations that were introduced in the US have made their way over the border and Canadians are now benefiting from the increased low and no calorie selections as well as the new and innovative range of portion sizes.

These innovations build on a number of initiatives already underway in Canada to help consumers make more informed food and beverage choices. In 2011, the Canadian beverage industry made a commitment to great calorie transparency by placing Clear on Calories tablets on the front of all packaging. By putting caloric information at consumers’ fingertips, Clear on Calories will help consumers and parents make informed purchasing and consumption decisions for themselves and their families
