CBA and CBWA Statement in Response to CBC Marketplace Study

March 29, 2018 (TORONTO)

Members of the Canadian Beverage Association (CBA) and the Canadian Bottled Water Association (CBWA) maintain the highest health, safety and quality standards for all of their products. Consumers can remain confident that bottled water products are safe.

As recent reports have shown, microscopic plastic fibers can be found throughout the environment – in soil, air and water. However, the science on microplastics is an emerging field of study that requires further peer-reviewed research and collaboration, among various stakeholders, on testing methods.

CBC Marketplace’s study on bottled water (the results of which were shared with CBA and CBWA members) used a testing method with several limitations that CBC Marketplace has acknowledged.

The CBA and CBWA welcome the opportunity to work with the broader scientific community on testing methods and the development of peer-reviewed analysis.
