APRIL 21, 2017 (TORONTO) – Jim Goetz, President of the Canadian Beverage Association, released this statement today in response to the American Heart Association’s Stroke journal research, Diet drinks and possible association with stroke and dementia:
“As the study in Stroke states plainly, the researchers do not draw any causal relation to the incidences of stroke or dementia – or any other condition – to the consumption of drinks with low calorie sweeteners, and that’s for a very good reason: there is none.
“The evidence is clear; Health Canada, the FDA, the World Health Organization and many other governing bodies all confirm that drinks with low calorie sweeteners are safe for consumption. And there is abundant scientific evidence to affirm they can also be a component of a healthy weight management plan.
“Our members encourage a health-conscious approach to the consumption of all their products and continue to provide a range of options and information for consumers so they can choose what is best for them.”
