CBA Comments on HC’s Consultation on Proposed Changes to Canadian Food Labels

In response to the Health Canada’s announcement regarding their upcoming consultation on proposed changes to nutrition information on food labels, the Canadian Beverages Association (CBA) issued the following statement:

June 14, 2014 – The Canadian Beverage Association welcomes the opportunity to review and comment on Health Canada’s proposed changes to nutrition information on food labels, its science base and how it would apply to all foods and beverages.

The Canadian Beverage Association and its members are committed to offering Canadians choice, variety and the information that will enable them to make informed beverage decisions for themselves and their families. Our members provide consumers with a wide range of beverage sizes and options, including many that are no and low-calorie. Information on ingredients used by our members such as low calorie sweeteners can be found on the CBA website as well as Health Canada’s.

In addition, through Clear on Calories, our members have come together to put clear and consumer-friendly calorie information on the front of all packaging. By clearly displaying the caloric content of our products, our industry is making it easier for Canadians to make informed dietary choices to meet individual needs and fit into their overall caloric intake.

The Canadian Beverage Association is the national trade association representing the broad spectrum of companies that manufacture and distribute the majority of non-alcoholic refreshment beverages consumed in Canada. Over 58,000 individuals are employed directly, indirectly and through induced jobs in the Canadian beverage industry.
